Het begin van de uitwisseling
Na een paar maanden te hebben gereisd door Azië, begon mijn uitwisseling eindelijk echt een paar weken geleden in Sydney. Twee weken geleden landde ik in de vroege ochtend, en diezelfde avond stond er al een evenement op de planning met andere exchange-studenten. We zitten met zo’n 160 studenten van over de hele wereld in een groepsapp, en daar werd voorgesteld om samen te gaan eten. Er kwamen tientallen studenten op af waardoor ik al gelijk mensen leerde kennen, met wie ik Australië kon verkennen. Onze groep bestond uit mensen uit Mexico, Spanje, Duitsland, India en Zwitserland. Mijn universiteit, UNSW, heeft ongeveer 1000 exchange-studenten, dus het is super makkelijk om nieuwe mensen te leren kennen.
De eerste week voelde een beetje als de introductieweek in Utrecht, met allerlei kennismakingsactiviteiten. ARC, de overkoepelende studentenorganisatie, had kraampjes van clubs zoals een outdoor club of schaakclub. Zo kon ik mijn week meteen vullen met activiteiten die mij leuk leken.
Op mijn tweede dag in Sydney ging ik met de internationale vriendengroep naar de Blue Mountains, een nationaal park op twee uur rijden van de stad. Het was fantastisch! De dagen erna maakten we nog meer hikes langs kliffen en door bossen. Ook gingen we natuurlijk uit en langs het operahuis. Momenteel plannen we leuke tripjes naar Tasmanië en Nieuw Zeeland voor over een paar maanden.
Tip voor toekomstige uitwisselingsstudenten: zoek vooral andere exchange-studenten op. Zij willen net als jij nieuwe mensen leren kennen en het land ontdekken. Het is de snelste manier om een sociaal netwerk op te bouwen.
Het is wel moeilijk om Australische studenten te leren kennen. Zij gaan meer met elkaar om. Ik snap dat op zich wel, het is best veel gedoe om een vriendschap met uitwisselingstudenten op te bouwen die toch over een paar maanden weer weggaan.
Sinds maandag zijn mijn lessen ook begonnen, en ik vind ze allemaal ontzettend leuk en interessant. Het onderwijs hier aan de ARTS faculteit is heel anders: geen tentamens, alleen opdrachten en quizzes. Toch komen de studenten goed voorbereid naar de seminars, en dat zette mij in het begin even op mijn plek. Ik dacht geen tentamens, niet voorbereiden. Echter tijdens de seminar was iedereen zo actief in het participeren dat ik me weg geblazen voelde. Sindsdien lees ik wel de literatuur waardoor de werkgroepen nu leuk en interactief zijn.
Mijn Airbnb, waar ik deze maanden verblijf is fijn. Ik heb geen huisgenoten, en dat waardeer ik vooral ’s avonds na een drukke dag vol nieuwe mensen. Elke dag leer ik nieuwe mensen kennen waardoor mijn sociale batterij volledig op is.
Kortom, de eerste weken van mijn uitwisseling zijn geweldig geweest: een perfecte balans tussen interessante vakken, sociale activiteiten, sightseeing en tijd voor mezelf. Ik heb heel veel zin in de aankomende maanden!
