Imar in Tromsø
Snow is here!
Snow is here! It is October, and we just had our first week of winter wonderland. The winter suddenly came very quickly, and the days are shortening even quicker. After the clock moved back, the sun set at 3pm already. But that doesn’t restrain me from enjoying every bit of Tromsø! Every mountain, every valley, every cabin that I explored the past months, has a completely new look and is ready to explore again! I even unlocked a new perspective today, sailing the fjords around Tromsø.
However, before winter was maybe the most unexpected season, autumn! I didn’t expect much of it, but it was the most beautiful
autumn of my life. It was filled with epic roadtrips and beautiful hikes, going to Nordkapp, Senja and Lofoten in consecutive weekends. What I could only hope for showed up even stronger than I could ever imagine: the Northern Lights! Wow, they are truly mystical. Standing by the campfire by a cabin in the middle of nowhere with a mug of hot chocolate and good company, looking up to the Northern Lights.. I still cannot believe that actually happened.
When telling these stories, my friends and family often ask: do you even study, do you also have classes?? I do, I am even doing 40 ECTS (instead of the normal 30), but the workload isn’t even comparable to UCU. I have 3 to 4 lectures a week, which are (just as at UCU) 1h45m, where you get a 10-15min break in between. I am following a mix of courses here, ranging from the History of the Arctic to Cyber Security to the Psychology of Language. Some are more interesting than others, but what I notice most now is the way its structured with exams. There are some in-between quizzes, presentations and essays, but they are mostly pass/fail, you just have to pass them in order to do the final exam in December, which is the vast majority of your grade. The exam season will be here in a month, lets hope that all goes well.
Before that, I will enjoy the experiences that are still waiting for me. The Polar night will be interesting, when the sun doesn’t rise anymore. I will see how long I can keep biking to uni and the city (yes I am a stubborn Dutchie), and maybe I’ll even go to Finland to visit Santa town. Ha det bra!
