De uitwisseling zit erop
De uitwisseling in Sydney zit er eerder op dan ik had verwacht. De meeste mensen hadden namelijk tentamens eind nov/begin dec maar mijn cursussen hadden alleen deadlines waardoor ik veel eerder vrij was. Hierdoor had ik extra tijd om rond te reizen door Australië en Nieuw Zeeland.
Ik volgde een aantal cursussen. Bij een cursus heb ik dingen geleert die me altijd zullen bij blijven. Het ging over Aboriginal Sydney. De docent Hayden deelde op een dag hun persoonlijke verhaal over het Aboriginal zijn. Zijn grootvader was gestolen en in WW2 naar het front gestuurd. Teruggekomen na de oorlog was hij zeer getraumatiseerd en raakte verslaafd aan alcohol. De grootmoeder werkte drie banen om het gezin te kunnen voeden. Vervolgens raakte Hayden’s moeder ook verslaafd aan alcohol en werd gewelddadig richting Hayden en zijn broer. Op jonge leeftijd werden zij uit huis geplaatst omdat het gezondheidssysteem in Australië niet de juiste hulp biedt aan verslaafde Aboriginal vrouwen. Hayden was
dakloos op zijn negentiende en gedwongen te werken in de prostitutie. Gelukkig had hij een ijzeren wil om door te werken en had uiteindelijk genoeg geld verdiend om een huis te vinden en terug te gaan naar de universiteit. Hierin won hij verschillende prijzen en haalde hoge cijfers en doet tegenwoordig dus een PhD. Elke week hebben we het over een nationaal narratief, en vervolgens de kijk van de Aboriginals hierop. Hierdoor leer je dat geschiedenis niet feitelijk is, maar meer een kwestie van interpretatie. Vandaag leerde ik bijvoorbeeld de relevantie van symboliek en emotionele waarde van 
kunst in steden. Het liefste wil het kapitalisme wijken zo creëren dat het economisch productief is. Echter dit haalt totaal sommige symbolen weg. Het is zo belangrijk dat ook te erkennen maar zo makkelijk weg te rationaliseren. Bijvoorbeeld een graffitimuur met een Aboriginal schilderij erop. Voor hen is dit een deel van het verzet en een uitdaging van de kolonistische samenleving. Sommige witte mensen willen ook die graffiti behouden, maar dan met als enige reden om de wijk authentiek en hip te laten lijken zonder enige erkenning voor Aboriginal veerkrachtigheid.
Het afscheid van Sydney en al alle mensen was erg moeilijk. We zagen elkaar bijna dagelijks en hadden zoveel
dingen beleefd. Omdat je familie er natuurlijk niet is, wordt je daar met mensen heel snel hecht. Dat is wel echt het bijzondere aan een exchange. Ik weet zeker dat ik hen binnenkort nog wel een keer ga bezoeken.
