Poolnacht gevuld met licht
Terwijl ik dit blog schrijf, besef ik dat er alweer twee maanden voorbij zijn sinds het begin van mijn exchange semester. Aan de ene kant voelt het alsof ik hier
nog maar net ben aangekomen, maar aan de andere kant kan ik me bijna niet meer voorstellen hoe het was toen de zon hier in januari nog niet boven de horizon uitkwam. Toch ga ik mijn best doen om jullie zo goed mogelijk mee te nemen in hoe de afgelopen twee maanden in de poolcirkel eruitzagen.
Januari was vooraf een maand waar ik best een beetje tegenop zag. Geen daglicht, en mijn lessen begonnen pas in februari—wat ga je doen in een maand waarin het alleen maar donker is en je agenda compleet leeg is? Maar niets bleek minder waar. De donkerte viel me eigenlijk heel erg mee. Ook al kwam de zon niet boven de horizon uit, het schemerde hier elke dag wel een paar uur. Tijdens die schemering kleurde de lucht steeds prachtig roze, alsof er een soort Instagramfilter over mijn eigen ogen lag.
Het beperkte daglicht zorgde bovendien voor een echte carpe diem-mentaliteit: ik wilde elke minuut licht zo goed mogelijk benutten. Dat resulteerde in veel toerskiën (met een hoofdlamp in de tas), sneeuwschoenwandelingen en cabin trips. Januari was ook de maand waarin orka’s en bultrugwalvissen langs Tromsø zwommen en waarin er bijna dagelijks noorderlicht te zien was. De poolnacht bleek dus allesbehalve saai.
Op sociaal vlak blijf ik me verbazen over hoeveel activiteiten er door Erasmus, de universiteit en studenten zelf worden georganiseerd. Van tevoren wist ik natuurlijk dat Noorwegen een rijk land is, maar de hoeveelheid gratis faciliteiten blijft me verrassen. Zo worden er meerdere keren per week activiteiten georganiseerd zoals wafels bakken en matcha maken, breilessen en concerten. Op de campus zijn er bovendien een bioscoop en zelfs een sauna. Ook heeft elke studentenhuisvesting hier een gemeenschappelijke ruimte die je kunt reserveren voor etentjes en spelletjesavonden.
Daarnaast kun je hier vaak gratis meetrainen met allerlei studentensportteams, wat een leuke manier is om ook Noorse studenten te leren kennen. Zelf heb ik inmiddels meegetraind met het ijshockey-, kunstschaats- en zelfs het waterkayak-poloteam. Kortom: ik heb me zeker niet verveeld in de donkerte.
Inmiddels zijn ook al mijn vakken hier begonnen. In totaal volg ik vier vakken: twee psychologievakken, een antropologievak waarbij we onze eigen film maken, en het vak The Norwegian Model, waarin we leren over de ideologie achter de Noorse samenleving. Daarnaast biedt de universiteit op verschillende niveaus Noorse taallessen aan. Daar maak ik graag gebruik van, waardoor ik drie uur per week in een kleine klas Noors kan oefenen.
Wat hier ook anders is dan aan de Universiteit Utrecht, is dat het studiejaar niet in vier blokken is opgedeeld maar
slechts in twee. Daardoor is elk vak niet 7,5 maar 10 ECTS waard, en heb je slechts één tentamenweek per halfjaar. Persoonlijk ervaar ik de studielast per vak hier als lager dan op de UU, en merk ik eigenlijk niet dat ik momenteel vakken volg die samen 40 ECTS waard zijn.
Wat ik vooral leuk vind aan het onderwijs hier, is dat de lessen een mix zijn tussen werkgroepen en hoorcolleges. De klassen bestaan vaak uit ongeveer 30 studenten, waardoor de lessen veel interactiever zijn dan de hoorcolleges met 600 studenten die ik van psychologie gewend ben. In de les is er regelmatig ruimte om de leerstof in kleine groepen te bespreken, en docenten gebruiken soms spelelementen om de stof op een speelse manier te leren, zoals met memory.
