A Dream Come True
Een grote droom is uitgekomen afgelopen januari: ik was geselecteerd voor een uitwisselingsprogramma in Australië. Hoe ideaal is het om een land niet alleen als toerist te verkennen, maar ook als student? Dit jaar volg ik term 3 aan de University of New South Wales in Sydney, van ongeveer 11 september tot 17 december. Voor de start van die periode hadden we natuurlijk twee maanden vrij. Die tijd wilde ik goed benutten om te reizen. Ik dacht: als ik toch naar de andere kant van de wereld vlieg, waarom zou ik dan geen extra stop maken in Zuidoost-Azië?
In februari begon het regelwerk voor de wereldreis. Dat viel erg mee, omdat ik alles ruim op tijd had geregeld. Eerst plande ik mijn reis in de zomer en vanuit daar mijn vertrek naar Sydney. Bij de universiteit kon ik pas twee maanden van tevoren reageren op studentenhuisvesting. Dat vond ik te onzeker, dus ik had in maart al een Airbnb geregeld voor de drie maanden. Duur, zou je denken – en dat is het ook – maar niet duurder dan reguliere huisvesting in Sydney. Nu heb ik mijn eigen studiootje, dicht bij de campus én het strand.
De laatste weken voordat ik vertrok vond ik het mentaal erg zwaar. Heimwee is iets dat je niet moet onderschatten; het ondermijnde mijn hele motivatie om weg te gaan. Ik kon me niet voorstellen hoe ik me zeven maanden moest redden zonder al mijn familie en vrienden. Ook de eerste dagen, totdat ik aankwam in Bangkok, waren erg verdrietig. Ik begon aan alles te twijfelen. Gelukkig ontmoette ik toen mensen met wie ik het goed kon vinden.
Dat is denk ik het belangrijkste aan reizen of ergens alleen aankomen: connecties maken. Niet dat je alles samen hoeft te doen, maar gewoon het vertrouwen dat je bij mensen terechtkunt.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed.
