Eeke in Tromsø
Uit de Domstad, op naar de poolcirkel
Over drie weken is het al zover: het exchange semester voor mijn studie psychologie in Tromsø gaat van start. Het voelt nog steeds onwennig. Vorig jaar januari hoorde ik al dat ik was geselecteerd, en wat toen nog zó ver weg leek, komt nu ineens heel dichtbij.
Ik vind het lastig om precies te omschrijven hoe ik me voel over het vertrek, omdat ik het zelf eigenlijk ook niet helemaal weet. De ene dag kan ik niet wachten: ik zie mezelf al op mijn langlaufski’s naar de universiteit gaan, ben fanatiek Noors aan het oefenen op Duolingo en scroll enthousiast door mijn Instagram For You-page, die inmiddels vol staat met prachtige beelden van Tromsø en omgeving. De andere dag voel ik juist veel spanning. Dan spoken vragen door mijn hoofd als: zal het lukken om in één semester nieuwe vriendschappen te maken? en hoe ga ik reageren op het bijna volledig ontbreken van daglicht in januari? Wat vooral vreemd voelt, is het besef dat het leven in Utrecht gewoon doorgaat. Als vrienden het hebben over verjaardagen of feestjes komend semester, realiseer ik me dat ik daar uiteraard niet bij kan zijn.
Wat ik niet had verwacht, is dat ik überhaupt deze spanning zou voelen. Twee jaar geleden woonde ik na mijn middelbare school namelijk een jaar in Noorwegen op een folkehøgskole: een soort door de overheid georganiseerde tussenjaarschool waarbij je op campus woont. Dat jaar heb ik ervaren als één van de fijnste periodes van mijn leven tot nu toe. De Noorse manier van leven, waarin harmonie met de natuur zo centraal staat, spreekt me enorm aan. Wellicht dat een «meer volgroeide prefrontale cortex» ervoor zorgt dat ik weggaan dit keer spannender vind.
Aan dat tussenjaar heb ik ook hele mooie vriendschappen overgehouden. Twee goede vriendinnen met wie ik nog regelmatig contact heb, studeren inmiddels al twee jaar in Tromsø. Naar het idee dat ik hen straks weer ga zien, kijk ik ontzettend uit. Tegelijkertijd vind ik het ook spannend om met hoge verwachtingen terug te gaan en hoop ik dit semester niet te veel te vergelijken met mijn tussenjaar.
Hoewel het semester pas over drie weken begint, vertrek ik direct na kerst al naar Noorwegen. Samen met mijn familie ga ik eerst een week wintersporten, waar ik erg veel zin in heb. Afgelopen week heb ik de meeste vrienden voor het laatst gezien en dat afscheid nemen voelde af en toe echt emotioneel. Onderhand heb ik mijn kamer ook al helemaal leeg gehaald voor mijn onderhuurster en staat mijn kamer bij mijn ouders vol met verhuisdozen.
Toevallig genoeg gaan mijn twee oudere broers rond dezelfde tijd ook op exchange: samen vertrekken zij naar Spitsbergen, een eilandengroep die nóg noordelijker ligt dan Tromsø. Het is fijn om met hen dat dubbele gevoel van weggaan te kunnen delen en samen praktische zaken rondom de exchange te bespreken. Na de week wintersport rijden we met z’n drieën in twee dagen met de auto naar Tromsø. Mijn broers blijven daar nog één nacht slapen, waarna zij doorreizen naar Spitsbergen.
Het regelen van een kamer in Tromsø ging overigens verrassend makkelijk en de prijs viel me enorm mee. Vanuit de universiteit moest ik een top drie maken van studentencomplexen, waarna ik een kamer toegewezen kreeg. Ik ga een keuken delen met tien andere internationale studenten. Dat lijkt me erg gezellig, zeker omdat ik afgelopen week mijn rooster ontving en zag dat ik gemiddeld maar drie contacturen per week heb. Mijn vakken beginnen bovendien pas in februari, terwijl de introductieweek al op 9 januari eindigt. Meer dan genoeg tijd dus om mijn huisgenoten en de omgeving van Tromsø goed te leren kennen. Ik neem mijn eigen ski’s mee dus hopelijk komen die in de eerste weken dan goed van pas!
